Wollongong, nicknamed "The Gong" by locals, is a city in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. Wollongong is located 68 kilometres (42 miles) south of Sydney, on a short coastal strip between the Illawarra Escarpment and the Pacific Ocean. In June 2018, Wollongong had a population of 302,739 people, making it the third-largest city in New South Wales after Sydney and Newcastle and the tenth-largest city in Australia. The city is situated in the south-eastern section of the Sydney basin, which stretches from Newcastle to Nowra geologically.
