In the 1800s, the first European settlement occurred, with land largely used for farming. Major growth, with the building of a considerable number of houses in the region, did not occur until the early 1990s. Between 2001 and 2011, the suburb's growth was slower, with fewer homes being developed. Carnes Hill is now a well-established residential neighbourhood with an industrial sector to its south. Carnes Hill is roughly 1.2 square kilometers in area. It includes two parks that cover almost 2% of the total area.
